SAN ANTONIO — State troopers are investigating a head-on crash that killed seven people and left two children hospitalized in San Antonio.
The crash happened a few miles north of Carrizo Springs in Dimmit County on Thursday afternoon. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a Chrysler 300 carrying four people is believed to have been speeding before it lost control, veered into wrong-way traffic and hit a Dodge pickup.
The Chrysler rolled into a ditch and caught fire, killing all four inside, DPS officials say. They were later identified as 20-year-old Ysamellie Castillon, 17-year-old Elijah Giovani Perez, 17-year-old Francisco Garza and 13-year-old Louis Mario Martinez Jr.
Three of five Crystal City residents whom DPS says were riding in the truck – 50-year-old Isabel Small, 64-year-old San Juanita De La Cruz and 83-year-old Victor Manuel Martinez – died in the wreck, which left both vehicles crumpled.
The only survivors are two unidentified children who officials say were airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio more than 100 miles away to be treated. Their ages and the extent of their injuries is unknown.
DPS is leading the investigation.
