Is Air a Compound or a Mixture?
Air is a mixture, not a compound. It is composed of various gases, primarily nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%), as well as small amounts of other gases such as carbon dioxide, argon, and trace gases. These gases are not chemically bonded to each other, but rather exist together in the same space. This makes air a mixture, as the different components can be easily separated through physical means such as filtration or distillation.
