Can COVID-19 Cause COPD?
There is currently no evidence to suggest that COVID-19 can directly cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as COPD, may be at a higher risk of developing severe complications if they contract the virus. COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system, causing symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, and pneumonia, which can exacerbate existing respiratory conditions like COPD. It is important for individuals with COPD to take extra precautions to protect themselves from the virus, such as practicing good hygiene, wearing a mask, and maintaining social distancing.
