Susan Smith, who infamously drowned her two young sons in a South Carolina lake 30 years ago, has been denied parole. Smith, who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, appeared before a parole board for the first time in 2021. The board ultimately decided that she was not eligible for release, citing the heinous nature of her crimes and the lasting impact they had on her community. Smith’s case gained national attention in 1994 when she initially claimed that her sons had been kidnapped by a carjacker. She later confessed to the murders and was convicted in 1995.
