Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (Medical Definition) | Quick Explainer Video

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a condition in which stomach acid flows back up into the throat and voice box, causing irritation and inflammation. This can lead to symptoms such as hoarseness, a sensation of a lump in the throat, coughing, and frequent throat clearing. LPR is different from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in that it often doesn’t cause typical heartburn symptoms. Treatment for LPR may include lifestyle changes, such as avoiding trigger foods and eating smaller meals, as well as medications to reduce acid production and protect the throat from damage. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the issue.
