In 1972, a company dumped 2 million tires into the ocean off the coast of Florida in an attempt to create an artificial reef. However, after 50 years, the tires began to break down and release toxic chemicals into the water, causing harm to marine life and the surrounding ecosystem. The tires also started to drift and wash up on nearby beaches, creating a massive environmental hazard. Efforts are now being made to clean up the mess and restore the area to its natural state.
